Blizzard of ’88 strikes Boston.

March 11, 1888

Also known as the Great March Blizzard of 1988 and Great White Hurricane, it is the worst blizzard in U.S. history to date and causes some 400 deaths. In Boston, the three-day storm strikes at 7 a.m., drops four feet of snow on the city, produces 60 mile per hour winds, and lowers temperatures to three below zero, but causes no casualties. The storm also produces calls for construction of a subway system that begins in 1897.*
